My review on J Stars Victory Vs on PS3!

When we are growing up reading comics or manga, we always talk to our peers or our self wondering who is better? Who is stronger? Who is smarter or so on. So J Stars Victory Vs came by and knock manga and anime fans alike to this crossover game featuring the most popular (and obsure) manga characters from Jump Comics.

As this is the 45th anniversary of Jump Comics, they decided to come up with a fighting game and they have fans vote through a website asking who they want to see in the game. Of course the big guns are there like One Piece, Dragonball Z, Naruto, Bleach and so on. The classic characters like Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya, Dr Slump and Yu Yu Hakusho are a nice touch for nostalgic but there are also lesser known series like Lucky Man and Yamada Taro which people wonder why such characters are included.

There are all together 52 characters from 32 series in the game. 39 are playable while the remaining 13 acted as support characters. So do everyone play differently? As a matter of fact, yes! Some are faster like Arale or Hi-Ei who can do faster combos while slower characters like Goku, Toriko and Kenshiro take more time to master their combos.

The game consists of several modes-J Adventures which is basically story mode. Victory mode which is Arcade mode, Free battle where you can battle with a friend or cpu, J Custom where you place cards to create different attributes or advantages during battle, J Point Store where you buy new characters and items, Online mode and Gallery mode.

The story mode is where you pick one of the four main characters-Luffy from One Piece, Naruto from Naruto Shippuden, Toriko from Toriko series and Ichigo from Bleach. Once selected, you will navigate on a ship and go around the map finding new characters and quests to continue the story. Most of the time, you will reach a place and battle with a cpu team or accepting a side quest to gain points in order to get new characters or items.

The fighting system take a while to understand. First it is not button mashing and you are confirmed to a square arena to battle. If you rush into battle, chances are you will be defeated quickly as the cpu tend to do a lot of damage in the early minutes. The trick is actually playing defense and counter. This can be done with listening to a beep signal before the cpu begin it's attack. You then press R1 and the direction of the left analog stick to avoid it. If you master well, you won't even get a scratch when the battle ended.

But the fighting system also has flaws. One, the camera angle tend to go too close and sometime you can't see yourself or your opponents especially if you are facing a wall or being surrounded. Next, when a opponent suffered damages and get up, there is like a five second invulnerability that surround it and your combo can't continue. This means you have to fall back and wait for the opponent to end it's invulnerability which can cost some precious time as there is a time limit in every battle. Every character have 3 special attacks which can be activated by pressing the circle button plus analog or R1 button like Super Smash Brothers. But sometime you can accidentally press the Up left analog and circle button causing a special attack which you do not wish to perform and this can be disaster if an opponent take advantage of it.

All characters have a stamina bar and you can recharge it with R1 and X button together. But the problem is R1 is also the guard button and if you press too fast, your character remind in a guard position. The victory burst is basically your ultimate attack and you perform it when the victory volt gauge actually move to the left or right and it signal the R3 button to appear. When that happen, your character will have a short time to activate their ultimate attack like Goku's Spirit Bomb but some characters will get additional power ups like Seiya's Sagittarius armor and the ability to use the golden arrow before the time run out.

However some characters like Bleach's Ichigo who use his Final Getsuka Tenshou will lose a life or Yusuke from Yuyu Hakusho if he get defeated during the cpu's victory burst mode will become Majin Yusuke but will lose a life once his time limit run out. Goku and Kenshiro although fun to use but surpisngly I find myself laughing away whenever Bobobo or Gintoki used their attacks and their combos are much easily to perform than the usual popular characters.

I didn't play much on Victory Road as it is basically selected a team of three and battle with other random characters. I didn't try the online battle due to my bad Internet connection. The J point shop was a bit complicated as you don't buy characters based on the point system but rather the Friendship gauge on the right hand corner of the screen. The higher the gauge, you will be awarded with tickets and together with the right amount of points, you then can buy your characters that can be used during Victory Road or Free Battle. This make things more harder to get since you will be wondering whether you are awarded with the tickets or not.

If you are a fan of your favourite Jump characters, this game is for you but if you want a good or at least an interesting fighting game, this might hold you back a bit. I get it what Bandai Namco is trying to do with the licences but if only the fighting system isn't that annoying, it could be a great game.

Pros:
-Every characters is unique and sometime funny in their execution of special attacks.
-Interaction between different series is interesting.

Cons:
-Camera Angle is bad especially close up.
-Buying characters is annoying.
-Story mode felt like a chore and wish could be more faster.
-No option menu to change difficult setting or controller.
-Last Boss is not really a last boss.

Final Verdict: 7/10 (If you are a fan of Jump Comics) 6/10 (If you know nuts about all these characters and the fighting system is annoying)

DIGI NEWS: Super Robots Wars UX, Macross 30 and Project Versus J

We have three big new titles for the first half of 2013! First Super Robots Wars UX will be in Nintendo 3DS and the line up is probably the most strangest line up this time around. We have DemonBane, Wing of Rean, Mazinkaiser SKL, Gundam 00 the movie, Heroman, SD Gundam Brave Battlers Warriors, Linebarrels of Iron and Hatsune Miku in a Virtual-ON Fei Yen?

So the big three characters-Nu Gundam, Mazinger and Getta are taking a back seat which is not a bad thing but seriously who want to see Gundam Seed Destiny and Dancougar Nova again? Anyway the graphics look similar to the Nintendo DS counterpart although there will be voices and animation cut-in scenes which is a good thing. It will be out March 14 2013 on Nintendo 3DS.

Next year is Macross 30th anniversary and to celebrate the occasion, a new PS3 game titled Macross 30 will united all the characters from every series in a dream battle on a strange alien world (Think Another Century Episode R but with only the Macross series)

Not just that, there will be new Valkyies jets to pilot on and an original story which will explain why the characters are brought here. I am surprised that Mari Iijima who did Lynn Mynmei returned to join the cast although I don't see Roy Fooker's seiyuu-The Great Kamiya Akira reprising his role.

The game will be out Feburary 28 2013 on PS3.

Also celebrating will be Shouen Jump Magzine which turns 45 year old next year! They also will be doing a special crossover fighting game titled Project Versus J. The screenshots show Goku, Luffy and Toriko battling it out.

Shouen Jump has already started a polling contest for fans as they want to know who they want to be in this game. It doesn't matter if the character is a male or female or is not a fighter type. For me, I want Gintoki, Sabea Ryo, Kenshiro, Seiya and the entire female cast of To Love Ru! If they bring back Ayukawa Madoka from Orange Road, my life is complete! (Yeah, I am a old school lover!)

No date has been announced but it will be out on the PS3 and PS Vita! So Western fans who couldn't play Jump Super Stars or Ultimate Stars will be rejoin for this new game!

For me, I will choose Honey Sound and Groovy Tune as it has all my favourite idols in it. Funky Note is for the loli group...Anyway it is coming out 25/10/12 on PSP!

DIGI NEWS: My review of PS3 Ninja Gaiden 3

I just finished Ninja Gaiden 3 and I know that there are a lot of bad reviews claiming that it is the weakest among the trilogy. From short game time to lack of weapons and even too many QTE moments, some even claimed that it was the new director, Hayabusa Yosuke's fault for ruining after Itagaki left Team Ninja.

But before someone come here and flame this post, let me give my two cents about the game.

First, I need to address something about Ninja Gaiden. I think the gamers today are spoilt for choice. I belong to old school gamers during the NES days and play the original Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on NES. Guess what, Ryu has only one weapon-A Dragon Sword! Don't count the special ninpo as they are secondary weapons. Ryu just wipe the floor with every enemies with one hit and it was fun.

So when I started playing NG3, I realised...yeah, actually you don't need any fancy weapons to kill your enemies. I mean, the Big Scythe or the Talcon Claws are cool but you have to keep changing weapons to defeat a certain enemy which to be honest, any enemy can be defeat with the sword. I agree that there are too many QTE moments when cutting down the enemy but that make it more realistic as in real life, it is very hard to cut down a person with a sword. It will break your arms if you don't know how to do it.

The Kunai Climb is a tribute to the NES games

I played the hero mode which is the easy setting and I find it to be challenging too. Usually I don't die of enemy attack but due to pit falls. All your moves from the previous games are still there but most of time, the Ultimate Technique (Or I call it a One hit kill attack) I have to use the most due to sheer number of enemies (Human and Non-Human) overwhelming you.

Ayane might be fan favourite but Momiji is my favourite babe!

Ever though it has a total of eight stages, it is pretty long especially the 2nd half of the story with mid bosses keeping appearing and crazy obstacles like a bridge falling and jumping off an exploding building. Overall, if you know your NG 101, I guess it is pretty easy to clean with a few surprises in between. There are some moments where you go back to scenes from the first two games and even the DS game.

I find the storyline quite interesting. We know from the last two games, Ryu doesn't talk much and some describe him as cold and unfriendly. But this one, Ryu talk quite a lot because he has a personal stake on this one. I guess you know from the trailer that Ryu was cursed by a mysterious masked man and the Dragon Sword is now in his body taking his life slowly. Furthermore, a terrorist group has issued an vendetta to the whole world-Surrender in seven days or die.

After that, there are a lot of plot twists that keep you wanting to know more. We also get to see another side of Ryu after he was cursed and the question of whether is there redemption for a person who kill others. There is even some tributes to the original NES games and a cameo which we hope to see this person in future installments.

Overall, in terms of game play, it could be a seven which is all right with me. But the story deserves itself a eight out of ten for me as it is the best storyline among the three games. (At least it is still a game unlike Asura's wrath which is just a show)

DIGI NEWS: Phoenix Wright (Gyakuten Saiban) Live Action Trailer & Musou Orochi 2 Game Trailer

From now on, all game related news will be under Digi News so that you can get the latest info on video games related news.

First, those who own a Nintendo DS will surely know Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Series which is one of the best selling titles. With it's courtroom battles, over-the-top characters and an amazing storyline, I love it.

Click here to watch the trailer

Now Toho has just released their first trailer for the live action Phoenix Wright movie. Known as Gyakuten Saiban which is the Japanese Title, the characters really look like their game counterparts. From the costumes to their hairstyle, I am quite surprised that it doesn't look silly. The courtroom scenes look fun to watch with 3D holograms and their famous phrases-"Take that, Hold it and Objection!"

The trailer looks like it is based on the first game with the focus on the fourth case-Turnabout Goodbye episode. For spoilers sake, I won't tell you how it goes. Go and google or wiki to find out more. The movie will air on 11 February 2012

Next we have a trailer for the upcoming Musou Orochi 2 or Warriors Orochi for the Overseas audience. As usual, the crossover of Samurai and Dynasty warriors returned with the cast based on the new PS3 series. However, what struck out was the 3 guest warriors-Joan of Arc from Bladestorm, Achilles from Warriors of Troy and Ryu (Bad Ass) Hayabusa of Ninja Gaiden!

Musou Orochi 2 Trailer

I got hyped up when I saw Ryu kicking ass and his theme music-The Fight of your Life got an awesome remix. He is probably the first character I will be using and the three guests also have their story lines and stages. Yeah! Now I am really pumping up!

Coming soon on 22 December 2011!

The Idolmaster Ep 17-Princess for a Day

Makoto is getting popular with female fans after being labelled "Prince". After buying a shoujo manga, she walked back to the office where she was mobbed by her fans.
Makoto tried to act cute again!

Back in the office, Makoto complained that she does not like being treated as a prince and wished she was a princess. Chihaya received a call and went outside to answer. Akabane took Makoto for her recording for a talk show and they met up with Jupiter who are also the special guests.

Touma provoked Makoto which she nearly lost her temper. After the recording, they met backstage however Akabane stepped in and tried to explain the truth of Hibiki's accident. However President Kuroi came by and taunted them.
The game they are playing is suppose to be a zombie shooting game but the name of the game is Time Crisis 4

Later, Makoto vented her anger in an arcade centre which Akabane accompanied her. She complained that the reason she joined as an idol is hoping that she can a real princess. Her father is a strict person and refused to let her do anything which is consider "weak" or "feminine".

Makoto then asked Akabane to take her on a date after buying a skirt. They went to the amusement theme park and enjoyed themselves. Makoto again complained about her father and wished that she can be a princess so that she can enjoy being a girl. (She won a soft bear in a mini game)

They came across two girls being harassed by some thugs which Makoto stepped in. The girls recognize her as an Idol which irritated the thugs. One of the thugs tried to attack her but Akabane shield them and took the blow.

When he came about, Makoto was beside him and she explained that more of her fans gathered after that and chased the thugs away. Akabane explained that although an idol's job is to give people dreams and Makoto has already given dreams for her fans to work on.

Finally they sat the merry-go-round where Makoto sat in the carriage and felt like a princess once. When they came back, Miki and the Futami twins found out about the date and started harassing Akabane.

The next day, Makoto has an another recording about "princes" which she requested Akabane that she wore a skirt...
Makoto look nice in a skirt.

A nice episode and to see Makoto being like a box of chocolates where her expression ranges from manly to cuteness. I giggled as she narrate the manga scene with both her manly and feminine voice. She also took Akabane on a date which is fun showing off her female side. Of course, she can't get away from her fans and her sense of justice.

I was expecting a confrontation between her and Touma but it was shot down by Kuroi who again make over-the-top remarks to taunt Akabane and Makoto. Again we are giving a teaser as Chihaya is having some personal problems and even took her call outside the office.

Next week, it is about Ryugu Komachi team as they too show signs of frictions.

P.S-I just got the PS3 Idolmaster 2 game and my team is consists of Chihaya, Miki and Takane which I named the group-Ta-Mi-Chi. So far it is quite fun and thank god with all the walkthrough and guides on the net, I was able to understand the game better.

Saint Seiya returns on PS3! (Feel the Cosmos in your PS3!)

An announcement was make on this week V-Jump magazine and Saint Seiya is coming to the PS3 in a beat-them up game!

Titled Saint Seiya Senki and from the looks of it, they are starting from the Twelve Gold Saints Arc (Again!) as they are wearing the first bronze clothes in the beginning. Anyway, Saint Seiya is one of those over-the-top anime in the 80s during the same era where Dragonball and Hokotu no Ken were running the airwaves.

It has a good story plot, the characters are interesting and the fighting were really extreme back then (Though Hokoto no Ken is violent in the visual department, Saint Seiya gave mind attacks each time a character get blown away!)

The details are still sketchy but it is coming this Fall and hopefully they could do the following arcs-the Asagrd Arc, the Poseidon Arc and of course the Hades Arc. (I mean it is a PS3 blu-ray!)

Dai-2-Ji Super Robots Wars OG coming to PS3!

As fans wonder what was that teaser trailer at the end of OG2: The Inspectors, it was confirm that we are getting a SRW game on PS3!

Yeah! Furthermore it is based on the Original Generations characters which are my favourite!
We have 2 new main character for a Real Robot and a Super Robot. The female lead is voiced by Kobayashi Yumiko (She did the voice for Ryoto. Not a personal favourite for me) and the male lead is voiced by Nakamura Yuichi who did Alto of Macross Frontier.

The graphics look more 2D with a 3D background but it is HD resolution which is a good thing.
I could see Kusuha, Ibis, Kyosuke in his Alt Eisen. No release date has been announced. But I got a feeling will be during Fall 2011. Furthermore, the special edition will include a blu-ray set of the first anime season if you pre order it. I can't wait for it!

Super Robot Wars Z2-Why is it in PSP?

Coming this April 2011, the first of a two-parter of the Super Robot Wars Z2 story! The title for the first chapter is called "Hakai Hen" or Break Barrier/Wall Saga which is the indication of a super big crossover with multipte universes! (It's all in a day's work for these guys!)

This time around, we have 11 new series that join the original cast of the first Z story- The new series are as follows:
1) Armored Troopers Votoms
2) Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (Season 1)
3) Shin Mazinger Z
4) Chikyu Bouei Kigyou Dai-Guard
5) Code Geass (Season 1)
6) Tengen Toppan Gurren Lagann
7) Macross Frontier (Movie Edition)
8) Eureka 7 (Movie Edition)
9) God Mars
10) Dancouga Nova
11) Trider G-7

The last three series has appeared in NDS and PS1 but this is the first time they appeared in High Quality and Voice included for them.

That's not all! Including the original line-up of SRW Z, we have 30 series in all for this one! The biggest line-up for this time around!  Many fans will be happy now that most of the series are from the newer shows of 2000s like Gundam 00, Code Geass (Yeah!) and Gurren Lagann (Finally!)

The interaction will be crazy as the game will take us from the space battles of Votoms, the desert land of Gurren Lagann, the alternative universe of Code Geass and the MS battles of Gundam 00! There will be probably hints for Code Geass and Gundam 00 who share a common plotline of Jupiter and Kamia showed what does it means by drilling the heaven and beyond to the child pilots like Renton and Simon.

Of course being a first parter means we won't see Double 0 Gundam, Gurren going Giga size, Alto getting Super Armored Valkryie until the next chapter which will come later of the year.

Now for myself personally, I am happy that a new SRW is coming out but why is it in PSP?! I mean if the cast is so huge, wouldn't be better that it will be PS3 with it's blu-ray storage? Furthermore is in 2 parts?! Come on, Banpresto! You can do better than that!

Anyway, enough yapping and hope they can do an OG3 on PS3 for this year and can we have a toku-like SRW game for PS3? I mean this year the three big toku giants (Ultraman, Super Sentai and Kamen Rider) are having their anniversay specials. Shouldn't be something be done and please no Wii!

Dragonball Z: The Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans

In the earlier 90s, Famicom or NES released their last Dragonball Z game on the system titled: The Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. It was a interesting card-based RPG game and it had 2 OVA episodes to go with the game.

So now in Dragonball Z: Raging Blast 2 for the major consoles today, we have a 30 minutes reboot of the original OVA but this time our heroes are already in Super Saiyan Form battling an updated version of Dr Lycee and his creation-Hachihyack.

So our story started years ago when the Saiyans invade a planet and it's habitats-the Tsufrians. They were killed by the "Gorilla Saiyans" and one sole Tsufiran-Dr Lycee created a machine that can infuse the wrath of the dead killed by the Saiyans. However Dr Lycee was killed and his spaceship was blasted off together with the "Vengeance" machine...

So now in present day, a mysterious cloud surrounded the Earth and small pods fell all over the world. They contained machines that produce a poisonous gas called Destron Gas. Goku, Gohan and Piccolo arrived at Capsule Corp and meet up with Vegeta, Trunks and Bulma. Vegeta explained the history of the Tsufrians and Bulma told them they have 70 days before the Earth will be wiped out by the gas.

Our heroes rushed to the nearest machine and tried to take it out. However it has an energy shield and suddenly, four figures appeared them. Freeza, Coola, Slug and Tullece-All who have been defeated by Goku years ago.

Goku and his friends take them on but Freeza and the others kept reviving themselves due to the gas's strange effect. Our heroes felt tired after emitting too much Destron Gas and were almost killed by Freeza. When Suddenly Bulma showed up with a vaccine to counter act the gas. She released the vaccine and the Destron gas machine was shorted out. Our heroes fought back and finally defeated Freeza and company.

After that, Goku asked Kai-Oh for assistance and they proceed to the source of the problem. The dark cloud surrounding the Earth. Dr Lycee was waiting for them and our heroes battled him. Dr Lycee was quickly defeated but his hatred for the Saiyan was absorbed by the "Vengeance"machine.

The machine started to change shape and became a humanoid named Hachihyack. He quickly took down Vegeta and Piccolo. The other three Saiyans take on Hachihyack but he was too fast. Then Goku saw a weak point-Hachihyack's defense is weakened the moment he fire his Revenge cannon and it will take 15 seconds to fire it.

Goku called everyone to aid and immediately everyone used their most powerful skill on Hachihyack. The combined powers took out Hachihyack and the fortress is coming down.

Goku used his teleportation to bring everyone back to Capsule Corp. The world was saved again except that Goku and Gohan has a hard time explaining to Chi Chi about their battle torn clothes...

I watch the original OVA years ago and there were more details like how Goku battled some of Dr Lycee's monstrous creation and the rest of our heroes were in different lands taking out the machines. Hachihyack never talk in the original OVA but this one he did. The battle with Dr Lycee was much longer with Goku and his friends went from normal to Super Saiyan Form and the BGM was awesome for that part.
Overall, a more updated Dragonball Story using today's art work but kinda of short for it...
