Maho Tsukai Precure Ep 1 Top 8 Moments and Review: The Magical Girl who fell from the sky!

Cure Up! Rapapa! Hello, everyone to the review of Maho Tsukai Precure Episode 1! Let's see how Mirai and Riko become the new additions to the Precure Universe!

No 8: A Shooting Star? No, it's just a Magical Girl!

Asahina Mirai who was preparing to go to bed, saw a falling star fall into the park and wanted to take a look. However her mother told her not to and she was disappointed about it. The "shooting star" was actually Riko who came to Earth looking for "something" and she ended with a bump on her butt after the tree branches gave way.

No 7: It could be a Magic User!

The next day, Mirai's grandmother overheard Mirai's conversation and suggested it could be a magic user and Mirai was filled with excitement. Mirai's mother allowed her to take one of her accessories as a gift which Mirai found an unique necklace with a diamond in it. After taking her stuffed toy bear, Mofurun out to town, Mirai's mother wondered where did that necklace came from?

No 6: The two girls meet!

Mirai accidentally dropped Mofurun from her basket and Riko told her about it. Mirai saw Riko is still sitting on her magic broomstick and it got her all excited seeing a real Magic User. Riko tried to run away but Mirai held onto her broomstick and both of them flew upwards to the sky.

But Riko is weak on her mana due to hunger and they fall back to the ground. However the necklaces from both girls surrounded both of them with a safe landing to the ground.

No 5: Have an Ichigo Pan!

Is Ichigo Pan a real thing in Japan? I might want to try it when I go there this year.

Mirai treated Riko with an Ichigo Pan and Riko confessed that she is a Magic User. Riko decided to show her some magic as a form of thanks and decided to make a stray cat talk. However Riko's magic backfired and the cat was making weird noises instead. (The cat is voiced by Hayami Saori. Does that means she is coming to the series as a Precure? Please also bring Nakamura Yuichi so that we can have our brother and sister combo in the show!)

Mirai suggested to make Mofurun talk although Riko claimed it is impossible to do that. Mirai explained that Mofurun was a gift by her grandmother since she was a child and has been inseparable ever since.

No 4: Meet Batty of the Dark Magician Group and Yokubal-the Monsters of the series!

The two girls encountered Batty who claimed to be looking for the Linkle Stone Emerald in which Riko wanted to probe more. However Mirai could sense something sinister from Batty and they both fled.

This time is all about Stones and Jewels?

However Batty appeared infront of them again and claimed his  "group" are looking for the Emerald to enchance their powers. Realising something was wrong, Mirai and Riko tried to run away again on the flying broomstick but Batty merged a crow's feather and a truck into a Yokubal and tried to take them down.

No 3: Cure Up! Rapapa!

The two girls were cornered (and hanging for dear life) by Batty and the Yokubal and Riko started chanting "Cupe Up! Rapapa! to chase the Yokubal away. After several tries and one voice together, the diamond in their necklace began to shine and it also affect Mofurun!

The two girls then became the Legendary Maho Tsukai Precure! Cure Miracle and Cure Magical!

No 2: The First Battle!

The girls were able to fight back against the Yokubal with a string of punches and kicks and the flying Broomstick. (Did anyone shouted X Kick when Cure Magical did several swings on the broomstick before delivering a kick on the Yokubal)

The two girls managed to hit the Yokubal so hard that Batty has no choice but to retreat with the Yokubal. After the battle, Mirai hug Mofurun and he started talking back to them which shocked Riko and got Mirai excited!!

No 1: The Magic Train Station!

Seeing how thing has escalated, Riko has no choice but to bring Mirai to the Magical School! The two girls entered a train station and using a special pass that Riko brought, the two of them landed in the magic train station and Mirai began her first step to a bigger world...

Well, what I think of this first episode? It is very similar to Happiness Charge Precure where Megumi meet Hime who is a native of the Blue Sky Kingdom. Here Mirai is full of life where Riko is trying to act cool but failed miserably especially her magic backfired most of the time.

But more interesting is how it reminds me of the Original Futari Precure series with both girls needed to be one voice to become Precures and with Mofurun as a catalyst. Like I said before, if one of them is missing, they are screwed since they can't transform individually like previous team. Their transformation item is very simple since it is just a necklace with a diamond on it though Toei being Toei will force fed all the various stones in later episodes and how the girls will probably find these stones to gain newer powers.

Mirai was basically Megumi 2.0 without any childhood friends to tag along. Her only companion is Mofurun which is a gift from her grandmother which I am suspecting grandma know more than since she did mentioned Magic users in the beginning of the episode. Very similar to Honoka's grandmother who also have a similar encounter.

Riko is a bit of show off but she is honest to admit that she is not good enough in her magic. But since Horie Yui was great in her performance, I gave it a pass. (Fun fact: Did you know before this show, Mirai's Seiyuu, Takahashi Rie was in a show called Sore ga Seiyu which she played a struggling Seiyuu named Futaba and in one episode, Horie Yui played as herself and Futaba's initial impressions was negative since Horie Yui's appearance looked plain and ordinary. But after Horie put up make up and performed wildly on stage, Futaba had a different opinion and even Horie told her that she hope to work with her again. Foreshadowing?)

Batty is voiced by Koji Yusa which is surprisingly perfect for the role since he is famous for playing hypocrite and psychos like Ichimaru Gin of Bleach and Tojo Ayumu of Gintama. Hopefully he won't go total obsessed psycho like Close from last season.

The monster of the series, Yokubal is interesting since the villains could just used any random objects to become Yokubal which could be good or bad since there is no need to find any random person who has issues and just turned him into a Yokubal. Since Yokubal is the Japanese word for Desire, I was hoping for Kogami Kousei from Kamen Rider Ozu to shout Yokubal or Subarashi in which Kamen Rider Ozu's theme is all about.

The first battle isn't interesting since the two girls are still trying to get their bearings and hopefully a special attack from the girls will be shown in the next episode. Their costume looked pretty nice and since they are not going for the usual primary colors, we might have a team that comprises of non primary colors. For some strange reasons, I am attracted to their older self...Doujins artists, do your duties!

The final scene with Riko bringing Mirai to the Magic Train Station is definitely a homage to Harry Potter although having a Magic Train Pass to enter the station is more cooler than rushing into an invisible wall in London Train Station.

Overall, I gave this episode a B. It is not a bad start but it is not enough to hook me fully. Maybe after a few more episodes, I will have a better idea how the series will develop.
